2011’s been a great year… for flaming controversies. We recall some of the greatest, most internet-shaking moments in Singapore 2011 cyber-history. Warning to kids: don’t try these at home!

Aaron Tan threatens 14 year old

Aaron Tan threatens 14 year old

“Priest lah.” This infamous phrase has no doubt stuck in the minds of many Singaporean netizens. 18 year old Aaron Tan, replete with harsh Singlish accent and dyed hair, recently made the news with a video he made: not for his poor English, but for threatening to beat up a 14 year old who stole his girlfriend.

Controversy Rating: Pretty high.

Adelyn Hosehbo slaps her mother

Adelyn Hosehbo slaps her mother

As if slapping her mother wasn’t bad enough, this teenager had to boast about it online. In true Singaporean fashion, her antics were Stomped, and more dirty laundry was aired. A friend revealed Adelyn had also stolen from her mother in order to get herself a Louis Vuitton wallet. She took down her Facebook shortly after, but it looks like she’s back in action online (albeit with a locked account).

She’s also friends with Steven Lim.

Controversy Rating: Facepalm.

The Model Search

You know what they like

First known as the guy who stripped during Singapore Idol auditions, he has since gone on to harassing people in Orchard Road with tweezers and being a general annoyance. Barely a month ago, an event poster featuring a top-naked Steven made the Internet, claiming that he would be holding a model search in Nanyang Polytechnic.

Given his penchant for raising eyebrows, it’s no wonder everyone swallowed the hoax hook, line and sinker. Needless to say, Nanyang Polytechnic was quick to denounce any affiliation with the event.

Controversy Rating: Quite funny lah.

The Train Otaku

The Train Otaku

There’s nothing wrong with trainspotting. In fact, it’s quite a common hobby in other countries, where there are a variety of trains. In Singapore, where every train looks alike, it takes a connoisseur to tell the difference. But it was exactly for his trainspotting skills (and geeky enthusiasm for trains) that Jay Tan, an innocent waiter, was ridiculed.

The Internet went ablaze with the meme of our local ‘train otaku’, who expressed his delight in the new Circle Line trains on national TV. One can only wonder about how he felt.

Controversy Level: So mean.

Fifteen and pregnant

Fifteen and pregnant

As if getting pregnant at 15 wasn’t enough, a Singaporean teenager had to boast about it on Facebook, and mention that she was marrying the father of the baby, too.

‘Those who wanna come for my wedding please like and comment’, said one of her status updates. She later turned nasty when unfavourable comments about her situation started pouring in, calling her detractors ‘faggots’ and ‘cowards’. ‘I may be pregnant but I don’t f****** allow you to speak of me, my future husband and my child like this,’ she said, in another post. God only knows what happened to the girl, but she definitely got her fifteen minutes of fame.

Controversy Rating: ‘I don’t know what to say’.
