A recent add-on for Fallout 3 has gotten gamers picking sides and making noise. Created by Japanese mod developer, KOBJ, the newest add-on is set in the ruins of the Fukushima Dai-ichi power plant.
KOBJ created the add-on in light of the rumour of the Japanese government being dishonest about the extent of Fukishima’s tragedy.
He hoped that by recreating the destruction of Fukushima power plant in a game, gamers could experience the disaster more personally and get a better sense of what’s going on in the region right now.
However, as good as his intentions were, many gamers and netizens are up in arms, crying ‘it’s too soon’ and that it was ‘in bad taste’.
Said one forum contributor: “Considering the delicate state of Japan now, this is really in bad taste. All this is from the perception of a 25-year old. It may not even be totally accurate”.
There are others in support of the add-on, taking it as an expression of his sorrow for his country.
Said forum contributor, Storm King: “He's affected by the situation more than us, so that's his choice, and if it's his way of getting through a tragedy, then more power (nuclear?) to him”.
Regardless of whether this add-on was appropriate or tasteless, it is still worth giving it a go. While there are a few technical boo-boos like mismatched doors and bad texturing in some areas, the add-on is generally impressive. The eerie mood and the great attention to detail make this a worthy add-on to the Fallout 3 mod stable.
