Blessed as we are on our sunny country, we can hardly be blamed for being ill-prepared for emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes. But what about zombies?

Get A Kit, Make A Plan, Be Prepared. emergency.cdc.gov

We have seen the devastating effects of a zombie apocalypse; take a cue from Resident Evil, Night of the Living Dead etc. Zombies are often portrayed as the result of the reanimation of dead flesh due to an infectious virus. This can be passed on via bites and contact of bodily fluids. Other possibilities include a mutation of existing diseases such as mad-cow disease or rabies. Does the possibility of a zombie apocalypse sound like fantasy now?

Fortunately, the CDC is here to help. To prepare you for a zombie attack, they have prepared several guidelines on what you can do to survive a zombie outbreak.

Prevention is better than cure

This rings true in all emergency situations. Be sure to prepare an emergency kit filled with essentials to enable you to survive the first few days of disaster while you find a safe, zombie-free area to seek refuge in. Essentials include:

• Water (1 gallon/person/day)
• Food (Non-perishable items. Think: army rations)
• Medications
• Tools and supplies (Utility knife, duct tape, battery-powered radio, batteries, etc)
• Sanitation and hygiene (A change of clothes, blankets)
• Important documents (Personal identification)
• First Aid supplies (in the event of chaos and disaster, the chances of getting injured are almost a hundred percent)

Fail to plan, plan to fail

After assembling your emergency kit, gather your family members and do up an emergency plan. First up, identify the types of emergencies you might have to be prepared for. Next, pick a meeting place to regroup in the event that you are forced to scatter. It would be advisable to pick two, one inside and one outside the neighbourhood in case you are unable to return home. Thirdly, make a list of emergency contacts such as the police, fire department as well as the zombie defence team. An out-of-state contact would be good to serve as a means to let the rest of your family know that you are safe. Lastly, plan your evacuation route. In the event of an attack or a natural disaster, you need to get of the area fast as total annihilation could occur in minutes!

Also, there’s a Zombie Survival Wiki and a Zombie Preparedness Initiative going on online now, so people are actually preparing for that eventuality, and it's not merely an obsession.

Never fear, CDC is here

Should a zombie infestation occur, fret not; CDC will be all over it. Like in any other disease outbreak, CDC will conduct an investigation and provide technical assistance to those who need it. The CDC would not hesitate to assist in identifying the source, containing its spread and searching for a cure.

With a little preparation, a zombie apocalypse doesn’t seem that catastrophic after all. So do your part, make sure everyone is clear on where to go, who to call and hopefully, in the event of an infection within the family, the virus clears out his memory of your plan as well.
